Student Activities

South Middle
2012-2013 Activity Book

Extra-curricular activities are an integral part of the middle school years. Participation in intramural sports, clubs and fine arts productions enhance students’ academics and skills, as well as allow them to explore common interests with new friends. Most importantly, participation in these activities provides a sense of accomplishment and personal pride, encourages time management and promotes school spirit.

In the past, hundreds of students have enjoyed our clubs and after school activities. Therefore, we strongly encourage students to take advantage of this year’s opportunities. Many of the activities are published in this booklet; however, students are strongly encouraged to watch for announcements on the video displays located in the sixth grade hall, pavilion, main hall and the intramural bulletin board located in the main hall where intramurals will be directed, when and where to sign up, and where to meet for a particular sport.

We have many clubs and activities to choose from and will try to offer any others you may suggest. Clubs and activities offered include: Chess Club, Homework Club, Duct Tape Club, Student Council, and Yearbook.

Activities will start at 3:15 and end at 4:20 P.M. Activity buses will be available to take participants home and will leave South Middle at about 4:30. Durham buses will be available to take VST students home. All students riding the bus home will receive a bus pass from their activity coordinator. Without this pass they will not be allowed on the bus. After activities are over, all students will report to the Pavilion and wait for instructions before boarding their bus. There are lists of Parkway bus runs in the back of this booklet. We hope to see all of you getting INVOLVED and having FUN!!!!!

INTRAMURALS

Intramurals are offered after school during the activity period that runs from 3:15 to 4:20 and will begin on Wednesday, September 5th. Generally, 6th grade meets on Monday, 7th grade meets on Wednesday, and 8th grade meets on Thursday. However, for certain sports, the activity sponsor may wish to invite students to stay for more than one day. Special arrangements can be made with parents. Activity sponsors reserve the right to make attendance a prerequisite for participation in certain tournaments depending on the number of interested students. The invitation to participate in intramurals is extended to any and all students.

Students are strongly encouraged to watch for announcements on the video displays located in the sixth grade hall, pavilion, main hall and the intramural bulletin board located in the main hall where intramurals will be directed, when and where to sign up, and where to meet for a particular sport.

All students wishing to participate should have tennis shoes and be appropriately dressed for the activity. The activity sponsor will give specifics in this regard.

Interdistrict competitions / tournaments with the other middle schools are offered for each grade level for certain sports. These events are coeducational and include: cross country, fleetball, basketball, volleyball, soccer and track. Again, activity sponsors will provide detailed information regarding times and locations as these events approach.
